Causes of Depression

This top list of Causes for depression is the result of hundreds of discussions and questions distilled down to this simple list. We have links to the discussions as well.

Question 1: What Causes Depression Mostly? Link: http://www.panicdr.com/what-causes-depression-mostly/

Best Answer: Huge accumulation of impurities and imperfections in body and mind system causes depression. Once we remove these things, depression will not be there. Our mind is getting its nourishment and energy from the food and drink we consume. If the food and drink that we consume is not up to the mark of high quality, then it will definitely have a bearing on our mental ability as well as our physical ability. There is no surprise in it. The junk food will definitely result in junk habits like drowsiness, sleep, lethargy, negative thinking and weak or poor thinking habits, etc. These are the main causes for depression. Mind’s main function is thinking. There are other functions also for the mind like deciding, ego, pride, memory part, etc. Thinking will go wrong if our solid and liquid intake is inferior in quality. When thinking is not clear, we want more sensual objects. Sensual objects create attachment. Attachment brings desire through the impulse of thought. If that desire is not fulfilled, we get irritated and angry. Anger leads to infatuation, frustration. Frustration leads to worry. Worry gives confusion of memory. Confusion of memory takes you to loss of reason. Thus one after the other we are going on adding negatives to our mind set. This enormous accumulation of bad qualities takes us to sleeplessness, lack of confidence, lack of concentration, anxiety, depression, etc, etc. We should see the origin of all these things and cut the root cause.

Question 2: What Disease Causes The Symptoms Of Depression, Thoughts Of Suicide And Cause Of Sleeping Patterns? Link: http://www.panicdr.com/what-disease-causes-the-symptoms-of-depression-thoughts-of-suicide-and-cause-of-sleeping-patterns/

Best Answer: Depression causes symptoms of depression. Any illness can cause you to feel depressed. A serious illness can cause thoughts of suicide. Sleep Apnea can cause loss of sleep. Loss of sleep can cause one to feel depressed. Your aunt sounds Depressed, an illness in itself that can be treated with a variety of medication. Some are more effective than others and if one is not effective, try another one. Do not give up. With Bi-Polar-ism, one is very depressed at times and high and other times. It goes back and forth. Not depressed all the time. Depression is not something one can get over by oneself. Needs medical help, advice, medication.

Question 3: What Are The Effects Of Untreated Depression? Link: http://www.panicdr.com/what-are-the-effects-of-untreated-depression/

Best Answer: A really interesting study published in 2003 in the American Journal of Psychiatry found that untreated depression might actually cause a loss of volume in the brain’s hippocampus. The hippocampus is a part of the brain which seems to play a major role in memory. For example, it’s one of the first regions of the brain to suffer damage from Alzheimer’s disease.
Here’s the abstract of the study.

Untreated depression and hippocampal volume loss
“OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of antidepressant treatment on hippocampal volumes in patients with major depression. METHOD: For 38 female outpatients, the total time each had been in a depressive episode was divided into days during which the patient was receiving antidepressant medication and days during which no antidepressant treatment was received. Hippocampal gray matter volumes were determined by high resolution magnetic resonance imaging and unbiased stereological measurement. RESULTS: Longer durations during which depressive episodes went untreated with antidepressant medication were associated with reductions in hippocampal volume. There was no significant relationship between hippocampal volume loss and time depressed while taking antidepressant medication or with lifetime exposure to antidepressants. CONCLUSIONS: Antidepressants may have a neuroprotective effect during depression.”
Also, a number of studies seem to suggest (though there is still debate on interpretation of the results) that antidepressants reduce suicide rates for those with major depression. If this is true, then we could say that untreated depression is more likely to result in suicide than depression treated with antidepressants.

Question 4: What Exercise Is Effective At Lifting Depression And How Often Should You Do It? Link: http://www.panicdr.com/what-exercise-is-effective-at-lifting-depression-and-how-often-should-you-do-it/

Best Answer: Exercise is only one step in getting depression under control (note I wrote control and not get rid of; people almost always have residual depression but it is controlled). The first and most important thing is doctor prescribed meds; those have saved more lives inflicted by depression than “natural” alternatives. The second thing is talk therapy. While depression is usually caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, there are almost always reasons that the depression manifested itself. Talk therapy helps you get at the root of the depression and helps you work with the behavioral manifestations that come with depression (cutting yourself off from others, seeing things negatively, etc). The third thing is exercise, but exercise in a gym or on a exercise bike at home is not as healthy as walking or doing things in the fresh air. Gym work and exercise bikes keep you in one place where your mind can return to dwelling on your feelings. Being out in the fresh air walking, running, swimming, etc releases your mind from the concentration on the depression.
