Every day at school i’m always feeling on edge and having anxiety attacks. I start to sweat, my heart beats fast and it gets hard to breathe and my eyeballs hurt and sometimes its so overwhelming that I have to run out of class without warning the teacher. Its so bad that I dont even want to go to school anymore. School is the only place that this happens.
I went to my doctor and he just blew me off by saying that I’m just a teen (17) looking for a fix and that he thinks I’m making this up! What should I do???

you’re not the only one. and punch your freakin doctor in the face and flip out on him..and i mean that seriously. no goddamn joke.
See a therapist and tell your doctor you aren’t just doing this for a fix and that you actually need help.
Chill out, you need to get through school then you can have panic attacks. Think about the underlying causes of this – do you have an unhappy home life? Have you had a failed relationship with a boyfriend/girlfriend? When you’re middle-aged you might expect everything to be great, but then you have to deal with illness and aged parents, so just enjoy your teenage years.
Talk to a school counselor if one is available to you. If not go to a different doctor with a parent or a trusted teacher to back you up. If a doctor doesnt believe you your best bet is to go with another adult to assist you. I went through a similiar situation when in high school. As I got older my condition got better for a few years until one day it happened again. I found out that had my condition been properly diagnosed earlier i wouldve been much better off through high school and college. Dont allow a doctor to blow you off just because you are teenaged.
You poor thing, thats exactly what used to happen me when i was in school, i kept leaving the classroom as well because (even thought they werent) i kept thinking everyone must be looking at me having this attack, even though i would have them and nobody would notice. It got so bad that i used to just sit on my bed in the dark not wanting to ever leave it because i was getting so many panic attacks and they seemed to be gettin worse and worse.
The only way to cure it is to talk to somebody about it sweetie, i had to go see a psychiatrist a few times. It doesnt mean youre going crazy, youre just suffering from severe anxiety and the best way to deal with it is to keep talking about it, you might not even have to see a professional, say it to a good friend in class and every time you start panicing, let them know and they might be able to make it go away. The worst thing you could do is not go to school cz its like youre feeding the problem and it only gets worse that way. I promise they’ll eventually go away, mine went away more or less straight away after that and i havent had a panic attack since… well unless you count the time i got stuck in a lift LOL
I hope this helps! xx
Do talk to the school guidance counselor. He or she will have some good ideas for you. Have you already tried talking to your parents? If not, please talk to them, if you can.
Don’t let anyone prescribe you benzodiazepine tranquilizers (Xanax, Valium, Ativan, Klonopin, etc.) for anxiety. Those things are BAD NEWS. They don’t cure the problem, they just hide it for a little while. If you take them long enough to become addicted (which can happen very quickly), the withdrawal is far more hideous than heroin or crack. But you don’t have to take my word for that. Go onto Yahoo Groups and type “benzodiazepine withdrawal.” Ask anyone at that group what benzos did to them.
well,
i had that when i was about 11 or 12.
now at 15 i don’t get it anymore.
mmmm,
i thought about something else,
or started laughing…then somebody cracks a joke
about you.you start laughing at that,& the attack should
go away…you should eventually grow out of
it like i did.friends friends friends.
if you have any;tell them whats up.
they should try to help you;
mine did.
i got attacks everywhere.
school.
home.
the mall.
/:
i was a mess.
you have to much to think about.
let it all go.
OMG.
same here!!
i get them every single day. especially in the classes i hate.
im a junior. and omg i hate it. like i get the nausea, and heart pounding and sometimes sweating. and it sucks cuz like you feel trapped. u know? like usually its so bad i forget about the work im doing and just concentrate on becoming relaxed again.
and how stupid of him! i think you should go to a phsychiatrist if you are looking into meds. or if your not you can get a phsycologist to talk to. or if you dont want professional help talk to a friend or family member u REALLY trust.
hope i helped a lil’
and ugh school tomorrow…..
lol
if you want to talk email me kk
Inform your parents about this and see if you can go to another doctor because this can get real serious…is anythng going on at school that trigger these anxiety attacks…you should try to figure that out….take care
I would go for a second opinion at another dr or go to a walk in clinic if you cant see another dr.
Wow dude u remind me of mysef exactly today i had a meeting with my guidence counceler and she helped me alot about the same thing anxiety people were making fun of me because of this tick i have i make this weird noise and cant help it. but what you should do is talk with your guidence counceler and work together to find the problem. hope this helps ^^
As a long time sufferer of panic and anxiety, please find a professional to listen to you! You aren’t weak, you aren’t a baby, you suffer from something very real. There is medication that helps. There is also therapy to help you cope as you start to get better. Yes, there is a better. Don’t give up on yourself, find help it is out there.
ALARM! have your parent/guardian take you to a different doctor. anxiety attacks can grow out of proportion. get help early and don’t stop because one doctor let you down – they are people too, not GOD. i implore you to get help NOW!
anxiety attacks? Never really heard of it. Im guessing it is associated with stress. There is no certain way to relief stress. Try to relax at home. Go out and play some sports with friends or just go for a walk in the park.
I have that problem. It’s not something you can just blow off. I know how hard that is. What works for me is to close my eyes and take several deep breaths and think to myself “calm” “calm”
Have you talked to your parents about it? My son is showing those signs too, particularly on test days. Is it a particular class? You need to think about exactly when it happens and what is happening around you. Practice deep breathing, talk to your parents, do some research on it.
i have the same problem !!! get a new doc and ask for some kinda pills !!!
Good luck i hope ya get this fixed
talk to your parents…the most understanding one of course. Tell them whats happening and that you cant focus in school and its causing problems. im in college and go through the same thing sometimes before test and or in class. i usually close my eyes and breathe in and out slowly and think of something relaxing. i try counting slowly and breathing in and out…..it stops the tightening in my chest. it works…..sometimes. just relax!
relax, when you go into school or start to get ready for school think of nice things , this should start to work in a few days , ie , think of your friends, pets family, holiday, good luck
know what your talking about. im 13 and i get it.
CLOSE YOUR EYES, deap, slow breaths…seriously, your ok. not insane. if you must, if its real bad, say u have to go to the bathroom to get out of the classroom and breath slowly in your hands(helps with the dizy/hyprventlaing)
yyour ok. disregard the dr. that said you wann attention. its real. obvously. I STILL HAVN’T TOLD ADULTS ABOUT MY PROBLEM . its not fun.
maybe you could tell the school councelr. idk…im afraid to tell but maybe you are brave-er
Just Breathe ok! everything is going to be ok.
Maybe you have a fear of people, I hear that it is a pretty common aillment and it may also be a fear of tests too. The best thing you can do for yourself is maybe go and talk to a phychologist. A medical doctor wouldn’t be able to diagnose the problem because it is a phychological ailment and not a medical problem. I have pretty much the same problem with severe storms. I guess it is just something that we have to deal with =(
I’m 14 btw so I know how you feel even though I have never seen a doctor because of it I know just how scary and annoying it can be
good luck =)
First off, your doctor is FULL OF SH!T and should be ASHAMED of himself and PUNISHED…but that’s not gonna happen.
Try somebody more sympathetic.
You might want to find a questionnaire on panic attacks (that’s probably what you’re dealing with) and see how severe your symptoms are. That would be a good way to bring it up w/a doctor or professional. Try WebMD or mental health websites…they have questionnaires you can fill out.
At the very least, your doc should have told you to look into stress relief techniques, like breathing exercises, tai chi, qi gong (along the same lines as tai chi but more about the breath), yoga, etc. Also, there are some “exposure” (not THAT kind of exposure!) exercises that are self-help things you can do on your own.
I used the book Dying of Embarrassment to help with my social phobia problems. A self-help book can be a good thing to look at, get a few tips at least, until you can get some help from a CARING, WELL-QUALIFIED professional.
Doctors are NOT GODS. They DO NOT have all the answers. Some of them are inconsiderate…some of them are downright harmful to their patients. When it comes to mental health, many of them are really prejudiced, and that is NOT YOUR FAULT.
You probably need to do some deep breathing stuff, a little mind-control kinda thing. But you probably need therapy and some meds. Keep looking for a doc that can help you, not some jerk who thinks you’re lying.
Your symptoms are real. Find somebody who believes you.
I do!
Edit: and BTW, general practitioners/family doctors/ nurse practitioners generally DO know about mental health stuff and though they’re no substitute for therapy, you may actually need to see one, if you’re in an HMO that requires a referral to specialists. Sometimes, they can also prescribe some meds until you can see a psychiatrist/therapist.
Personally, I despise psychiatrists because all the ones I’ve seen have been total quacks or just not very bright. I get my meds from my family doctor’s office (from the doc or the nurse practitioner, who can prescribe anything but controlled substances, which you don’t need, anyway) and I see my lovely therapist twice a week.
Psychiatrists are often much worse than family doctors because they have prejudices and tend not to listen to what you’re actually saying. They can misdiagnose you quite easily if they hear what they want to hear instead of what you’re actually saying. Some are good, I guess.
I’ve never seen any good ones.
But therapy is certainly called for here. If it takes referrals from your PCP, get them. Be persistent. Managed care sucks sometimes, but if that’s whatcha gotta do, do it.
I don’t know anything about your eye balls hurting, but I am very aware of panic attacks…having them myself…You should call your county mental hospital….Yeah the one where people go to the hospital because they want to kill themselves…I know you don’t want to kill yourself..but people don’t realise how panic disorder really effects a person…I’m from Saratoga county, so I called Saratoga County Mental Hospital….so you should call your county office and tell them what you are going threw and they will help you…good luck
Get another doctor – what kind of arrogant a** would say something like that to a patient????
If my doctor said something like that to me, not only would I fire him, but I’d report him to the AMA.
That is just ridiculous.
FP
see a new doctor how and why would someone make those things up!
Beat yo doc’s balls off, and get a new one. That’s bullzhit that he said that. He’s your doctor, not you goddamn psychologist.
I’m 17 too man… haha
talk to your mom, see a BETTER docter, and just remember you have control over your life not the other way around, there’ no reason to panic, everything’s in order and will work out, but you need to tell us are you sure it’s an anxiety attack is it from being nervous and worring about things or are you actually sick?
i would just suggest that you tell your teachers beforehand, then if you do leave class they will know why, but i would go see another doctor
Continue to talk to your doctor and if he/she won’t help, get a new doctor. Anxiety, or panic attacks, seem severe … but they won’t kill you. When this happens, try to talk yourself into believing and knowing that YOU WILL BE OKAY and IT WILL BE OVER SOON !!
Goodluck
o i c.
